2018-19 marks Mary Brown's second year as the Director of Bands and 10th year teaching at Ryan High School. As the Director of Bands, Mrs. Brown oversees all aspects of the Ryan band program, directs the Wind Symphony, Marching Band, and Concert Band, and teaches AP Music Theory. The Ryan band program is a consistent recipient of the UIL Sweepstakes Award. The Raider Marching Band has a proud tradition of earning UIL 1st Division ratings and is a consistent finalist in marching band contests including the UIL Area Marching Band Contest. Under Mrs. Brown direction, the Ryan Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band earned UIL 1st Division ratings. The Concert Band also received Best in Class awards at the Alamo Showcase of Music and the Winter Park Music Festival. Mrs. Brown's AP Music Theory students continually earn very high scores on the AP exam and many have pursued music as a major in college.
Mrs. Brown is originally from Beaumont, Texas. She began her career with the Ryan High School Band as Assistant Director in 2009. Mrs. Brown was a student teacher at Ryan High School under Eddy Russell and Navo Middle School under Ray Staniszewski. In 2008, she completed her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas. While at UNT, Mrs. Brown studied clarinet under Dr. James Gillespie and performed in the Symphonic Band under Dennis Fisher and the Green Brigade Marching Band under Dr. Nicholas Williams. Mrs. Brown is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, the North Texas Society of Music Educators, and the Texas Music Educators Association. She is active as an adjudicator for UIL Solo and Ensemble contests and TMEA auditions and has served as UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest Host and TMEA Region 2 Band Organizer. Mrs. Brown resides in Denton with her husband, Zach and their son, Luke.
Juan Nuñez is entering his sixth year of teaching and first year as the Associate Director of Bands at Ryan High School. Mr. Nuñez will be directing the Symphonic Band and the Raider Jazz Band while also assisting with all aspects of the Band Program at the High School and Middle School Level.
Mr. Nuñez received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a concentration in trumpet from the University of North Texas. While at UNT, Mr. Nuñez performed in a variety of ensembles, including the Green Brigade Marching Band, UNT Basketball Pep Band, Concert Band, Brass Band, Mariachi Aguilas, Phi Mu Alpha Chorus, and both the 8 O’clock and 2 O’clock Steel Bands. He also spent two summers performing with the 6 time World Champion, The Santa Clara Vanguard.
Prior to his appointment at Ryan, Mr. Nuñez spent five years as an Assistant Band Director at Lake Dallas High School. There he helped start and direct the second Jazz Ensemble, conducted the Symphonic Band to multiple sweepstakes, and assisted the Falcon Marching Band to their first Area Finals in school history. Mr. Nuñez has served as an instructor for both the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps (San Antonio, TX) and Revolution Drum and Bugle Corps (San Antonio, TX) and is currently on the brass team for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps (Casper, WY).
Aside from Band, Juan enjoys to watch sports and is an avid fan of football (Go Cowboys!) and futbol (Go FC Dallas!). He also enjoys cooking, eating, and most importantly, getting to spend time with his beautiful wife, Jen!
Akira Robles joined the Ryan High School Band faculty in 2016-17 as the Director of Percussion. He is responsible for the oversight of all percussion activities at Ryan HS and its feeder middle schools, including teaching percussion classes at Ryan HS and its feeder middle schools, marching band percussion, concert percussion, percussion ensembles, and assisting with the administration of the Ryan band program.
Mr. Robles taught high school and middle school percussion in Illinois for nine years prior to his appointment at Ryan. He is also a percussion instructor for Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, where he has been teaching since December 2010. His percussion teaching experience includes drum and bugle corps, marching band, percussion ensembles, solos, concert band percussion, steel drum band, and private lessons. Mr. Robles is a graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Percussion Performance and Literature. He is expected to complete his Doctor of Percussion Performance and Literature degree in May 2018.
Mr. Robles has performed in a wide variety of ensembles in Illinois including Sinfonia Da Camera Orchestra, Champaign Urbana Symphony Orchestra, University of Illinois Gamelan, and I-Pan Steel Drum Ensemble. He has been a featured guest performer with the Illinois Wind Symphony, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Florida Atlantic University Percussion Ensemble, and Tarleton State University Percussion Ensemble. Mr. Robles also performed with Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from 2005 to 2007 and was an instructor for their 2010 season.
